My background and approach
BACKGROUND A native of the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the Southeast United States, I grew up with a strong connection to the sea and the maritime history that goes with it. My family goes a long way back with origins in England, my grandfather being a particularly able sailor of his own craft as well as a master shipwright. Naval art and historical maritime prints, maritime art and the sea have gone hand in hand with my upbringing.
I have been able to draw upon this rich family background and my life by the sea with an almost scholarly approach to all of my pieces, always aiming for the most exacting historical accuracy with all the maritime art and history I portray while never losing sight of bringing the viewer into the drama of the event.
I received my art school training and Bachelor's degree from East Carolina University School of Art. I am currently devoting myself exclusively to building my portfolio of maritime art, marine art, limited edition lithographs, nautical art, prints and framed art.
My work has been published and hangs in marine art galleries as well as private nautical art collections. I am also available for commissions for original maritime artwork.
APPROACH Each concept begins with thorough research into the historical maritime event being portrayed as well as the ships and men who were involved. Depending on the subject matter, I frequently collaborate and conduct research with archivists at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich England, as well as other maritime sources around the globe, including Museum Ria de Bilbao in Spain and the United States Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, Maryland.
From there, the concept gradually takes shape, with composition and historical details added, step by step. At this point, the signature synopsis which appears at the bottom of each nautical art print is developed; painstaking research into the typography of the period from which the illustration derives as well as drafting the synopsis which tells the story of the event being portrayed is conducted.
The finished original maritime artwork is then photographed and the image is digitally coupled with the completed graphic synopsis. With everything now
put together, the piece is ready for printing (offset lithography) on acid-free archival quality paper.
Each printed copy is hand signed, numbered and affixed with a seal.
Every print purchased is carefully prepared and encased in a durable mailing tube which we ship right to your door.
